Taking climate justice to the world’s highest court

To protect their homelands and cultures from the devastating impacts of climate change, the student initiative PISFCC has been campaigning to bring the world’s biggest problem to the world’s highest court (World Court). On March 29th, this historic milestone was reached. 193 states agreed to approach the World Court with an urgent legal question: „What are the obligations of states under [...] international law to ensure the protection of the climate system [...] for present and future generations?“ The World Court's answer, a so-called „advisory opinion“, could urge governments to significantly reduce carbon emissions and catalyze impactful climate lawsuits worldwide. In the upcoming proceedings, all states will have the opportunity to address the court and take a stand for climate justice. Civil society around the world will play a crucial role in forcing this action.
